Your compliance training responsibilities as a generator under the FAC 64E-16
When biomedical waste is improperly managed, it places health care workers, sanitation workers, and the general public at risk for contracting dangerous diseases. In 1987 both the Sate of Florida Department of Health and the Bureau of Environmental Health set forth the Florida Administrative Code; Chapter 64E-16 (herein referred to as the code) to assist you in doing your job safely and above all to ensure the safety of the general public.
As the rate of individuals in the U.S. with infectious diseases continues to rise and with the introduction of numerous health practitioners, it is responsibility of all who handle Regulated Medical Waste (r.m.w.) to follow the proper handling and management practices set forth by the code. The standards set forth by this code are the minimum standards of operation for all biomedical waste generators in Florida. Keep in mind, the code is more stringent than those set forth under O.S.H.A., 29CFR 1910.130, (blood borne pathogens regulations and standards).
As a generator of r.m.w it is your responsibility to train both new and existing personnel in the handling of r.m.w. For new personnel this training must be provided before the commencement of duties related to r.m.w. handling and exposure. In addition, refresher training must be completed on an annual basis and records of such must be kept on site.
